Hotels in Lithuania concentrate almost entirely in Vilnius. For a first visit, that is the right base. Kaunas and the lakeside town of Trakai each add a different day, when the schedule allows it.

Vilnius Old Town is the most walkable base for a first visit, with Užupis just across the river as a quieter, better-value option. Kaunas suits an overnight for a longer trip. Trakai usually works better as a day trip than a base.

Vilnius Old Town anchors hotels in Lithuania

The UNESCO-listed Old Town, one of the largest in Northern Europe, is the obvious first-visit base. Cathedral Square, Gediminas Tower and most major sights sit inside or just outside it. Rates run highest here. Streets around the main squares can be loud on weekend nights. A rear-facing room is worth requesting if light sleep matters.

Užupis gives a quieter, better-value alternative

Užupis is a self-declared bohemian republic just across the river from Old Town. It is reachable on foot in about ten minutes. Its accommodation is mostly apartments and small guesthouses, rather than hotels. Rates here generally beat the Old Town core. It has a quieter, more residential feel, plus a concentration of galleries and independent cafes.

Kaunas is Lithuania's second city and a realistic overnight

Kaunas is about an hour from Vilnius by train, or a little longer by bus. It is known for its interwar-modernist architecture and its own compact old town. Its hotel scene is much smaller than Vilnius's, mostly independent and boutique properties. It is enough for an overnight, if the itinerary allows an extra day outside the capital.

The city's pedestrian main street, Laisvės alėja, connects most sights. Any central hotel sits a short walk from it.

Trakai is best treated as a day trip, not a base

Trakai is a lakeside town roughly thirty minutes from Vilnius, best known for its red-brick island castle. Hotel and guesthouse capacity is limited. Most visitors do it as a half-day or full-day trip from a Vilnius base, rather than an overnight stop. A small number of lakeside guesthouses make an overnight possible too. That suits a slower visit built around the lakes, not just the castle.

Getting to your hotel from Vilnius Airport

Vilnius Airport sits about seven kilometers south of the Old Town. A taxi or ride-hailing app reaches most central hotels in fifteen to twenty minutes outside rush hour. A train also connects the airport directly to Vilnius railway station. That is a short walk from Užupis. It is a longer walk, or a quick bus ride, from the far side of Old Town.

Anyone flying into Kaunas Airport instead, a common budget-carrier entry point, should plan differently. Book an onward bus to Vilnius, or a Kaunas-first hotel stay. Do not assume an easy transfer between the two cities on arrival day.

Family, couple and budget notes for hotels in Lithuania

Families do well in Užupis, or in one of Vilnius's quieter residential pockets. Apartment-style stays there give more room and easier evenings than a busy Old Town hotel. Couples get the most from an Old Town stay on a short trip. The atmosphere and zero transit time outweigh the extra cost then.

Budget travelers should weigh a Kaunas overnight against an extra Vilnius night. Kaunas generally runs cheaper per night, but the savings need to cover the added fare and travel time.

What's new for hotels in Lithuania in 2026

For 2026, the main change for non-EU guests happens at the border, not the hotel.

Since 12 October 2025, the EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) has registered non-EU citizens on short stays when they cross the Schengen external border. It records passport details, fingerprints and a facial image, and it replaces passport stamps. The European Commission says it has run at all Schengen borders since April 2026.

Hotels still ask for a passport or ID card at check-in. Check the EU's official EES page before you travel. ETIAS, a separate travel authorization, has not started yet.

Choosing a base for a Lithuania-only trip

A three or four night Lithuania trip works well based entirely in Vilnius, with a Trakai day trip built in. A week or longer makes room for an overnight in Kaunas too. That costs no more than a day of the Vilnius stay.

How Lithuania's hotel scene compares to Estonia and Latvia

Vilnius runs close to Tallinn and Riga for equivalent quality and location. Cost should rarely decide between the three capitals. Kaunas sits noticeably cheaper than any of the three capitals. That makes it a reasonable value add-on for a longer trip.

Trakai's small guesthouse scene prices closer to Kaunas than to Vilnius. That is another reason it works better as a budget overnight. A rushed day trip suits it less, when time allows.

Verdict on hotels in Lithuania

Book hotels in Lithuania in Vilnius first. Choose Old Town for a short first visit, or Užupis for better value on a longer stay. Add an overnight in Kaunas only once the trip runs a week or longer. Treat Trakai as a day trip, unless the rest of the itinerary already runs at a slow, lake-focused pace.
