Vilnius has a monument to Frank Zappa, the American composer and musician, on K. Kalinausko Street. It is a small public-art stop rather than a large museum. The interest lies in the choice of subject and the city's independent music culture as much as in the sculpture itself.

When and why the monument appeared

Go Vilnius's monument record dates the unveiling to 17 December 1995. The city's Lithuanian-language account identifies photographic artist Saulius Paukštys as an organiser and Konstantinas Bogdanas as the sculptor. The TARTLE art centre's catalogue also names Bogdanas as the maker and places the unveiling on K. Kalinausko Street in 1995.

The city account describes how Paukštys and art critic Ernestas Parulskis circulated an invented story about a meeting with Zappa. TARTLE's catalogue traces the same story as part of the campaign that led to the monument. The work belongs to Vilnius's cultural life after restored independence: local artists chose an American musician as the subject of a new public memorial.

Finding the sculpture

The official address is K. Kalinausko g. 1. Use the map on the Go Vilnius record for the approach, since the sculpture sits away from the most obvious Cathedral Square sightseeing circuit. From the central city, make it a short detour on foot rather than a trip needing a whole day. The pavement and courtyard setting deserve the same care as other shared city spaces: leave residents' entrances clear and keep group photography compact.

Look at the bust, the column and the square together. They show how a small memorial fits within an everyday city neighbourhood. The municipal record includes photographs of the sculpture and a map of its location. Allow time for the detour and keep the pavement clear for residents and other visitors.

Alternative music and the NATO bar

For experimental music in Vilnius, explore the Vilnius Jazz festival's artists and programme. Choose a concert by its date, venue and format, then check the ticket information. A daytime visit to the monument and an evening performance can be separate parts of a music-focused city day.

A walk with room for music

Make the monument one stop in a central Vilnius walk. A practical order is to explore the main city sights first, take the K. Kalinausko Street detour, and leave an evening performance for a separate booking. That avoids treating the sculpture as a ticketed attraction or expecting a programme at the monument itself. The Vilnius visitor guide separates restaurants, public music venues and performing-arts operators.

For a longer stay, the Lithuania itinerary combines Vilnius with other cities and Trakai. Compare Lithuania accommodation areas once you know whether your evenings will be central or elsewhere. A guidebook focused on your Baltic route can add art and history context without making the day depend on a single small landmark.
