Lithuanian flights mostly route through Vilnius. A smaller set of budget routes serves Kaunas too. Comparing both before booking often reveals a better fare or a more convenient schedule.
Vilnius offers the widest direct route choice from major European cities. Kaunas draws more budget carriers, often at a lower fare. Book two to three months ahead for the best price, earlier for summer travel.
Where Lithuanian flights actually come from
Many European hubs run direct routes into Vilnius. That makes it the easiest single booking for most trips. Kaunas draws a smaller set of budget routes. These concentrate on a handful of cities, not the broad network Vilnius offers.
Comparing fares between Vilnius and Kaunas
Kaunas often prices lower than Vilnius on the same route. Budget carriers drive most of that gap. That saving needs weighing against the extra ninety-minute transfer to Vilnius. Time and onward transport cost can erase some of the price edge.
When to book Lithuanian flights
Two to three months ahead works well for most routes. That gives a fair balance of price and schedule choice. Summer travel benefits from booking even earlier. Seats on the most convenient departure times sell out first.
Last-minute fares exist too, though they rarely beat an early booking on price. A flexible traveler can shift dates by a day or two, and sometimes find a gap in an otherwise costly week.
Weighing fares against airport logistics
See the Lithuania airport guide for how Vilnius and Kaunas compare on ground transport once you land. A cheaper Kaunas fare, paired with a rental car onward, can still beat a pricier direct Vilnius flight. It depends on the rest of the trip.
What's new in 2026
The main change for 2026 is at passport control.
Since 12 October 2025, the EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) has registered non-EU citizens on short stays when they cross the Schengen external border. It records passport details, fingerprints and a facial image, and it replaces passport stamps. The European Commission says it has run at all Schengen borders since April 2026.
If you connect through another Schengen airport, you register there and not again in Lithuania. Check the EU's official EES page before you travel. ETIAS, a separate travel authorization, has not started yet.
Routes change each season, so check Lithuanian Airports for current destinations.

Direct versus connecting flights
A direct flight into Vilnius saves real time compared with a connection through another European hub. Connections sometimes cost less though, especially from cities without a direct Vilnius or Kaunas route. Weigh the time saved against the fare difference before assuming direct always wins. A long layover can erase most of that time edge anyway.
Budget carriers
Budget carriers serve both Vilnius and Kaunas, though Kaunas draws more of this traffic overall. Baggage fees and seat selection both cost extra on most budget fares. Compare the real total cost against a full-service ticket before assuming the budget option wins. A full-service fare sometimes ends up close in price once bags and seats are added to a budget ticket.
Seasonal patterns in fares and routes
Summer brings the widest route choice and the highest prices. Airlines add extra frequency to meet demand then. Winter sees fewer routes and lower prices. Some smaller budget routes pause entirely outside the summer season. Shoulder months, May and September, often give the best mix of decent route choice and reasonable fares.
Verdict: where to fly into Lithuania
Book Lithuanian flights into Vilnius for the widest route choice. Compare Kaunas fares first, if a budget carrier serves the trip's origin city. Book two to three months ahead for the best price, earlier still for summer travel.
