Riga Cathedral, also called the Dome Cathedral or Rīgas Doms, is a working Lutheran church and a concert venue. Plan a sightseeing visit and an organ concert as separate choices: ordinary admission is not a concert ticket. Start with the cathedral's visitor information, then choose a dated performance from its concert programme if hearing the organ is your main reason to go.
Visiting hours and admission
The cathedral's visitor page, checked on 1 November 2026, lists ordinary visiting hours of 10:00 to 17:00 Monday to Saturday and 14:00 to 17:00 on Sunday. It also links to the current week's opening hours. Read that weekly notice before setting off, especially around services and holidays.
Ordinary admission is listed as €5, with €3 admission for children aged 11 to 18 and free entry for children aged 10 and under. These are the sightseeing prices on the visitor page, not a promise about concert, balcony or tower admission. Recheck the operator's page before paying.
The cathedral remains in religious use, with regular services in Latvian. Choose the visitor hours for sightseeing and follow staff instructions when a service is taking place. A quiet look around the interior and a booked musical performance are different ways to spend time here.
Hearing the organ: choose a dated concert
The short Concerto Piccolo performances offer about 20 minutes of organ music. Many are at noon, but the actual programme includes other times. For example, the November 2026 list places several Sunday performances at 15:00. Check the date itself rather than assuming every short concert starts at midday.
The same programme lists longer evening concerts, with performers, repertoire and ticket links. Pick by the music and the time you can attend. Do not rely on an older travel article's weekly schedule: the current calendar is the useful source for a particular visit.
For a short city break, choose the performance first and fit lunch or a walking route around it. If you only want to see the building, use the sightseeing hours instead. The concert listing's ticket link is the place to confirm the price and booking terms for that performance.
What makes the Walcker organ worth a look?
The cathedral's history of its organ dates the E. F. Walcker & Co instrument to 1883–1884. It describes 124 stops and 6,718 pipes. Its richly carved visible case has a longer history, reaching back to an earlier instrument completed in 1601.
Looking at the case gives you one part of the story; hearing a performance gives you another. A concert programme can also feature other instruments or singers, so read the named performers before choosing a ticket solely to hear the Walcker organ.
Balcony visits and access
An organ balcony visit is a separate guided activity arranged in advance. The cathedral describes a visit of 30 to 60 minutes with organ specialists, covering the galleries, console and parts of the instrument. Availability and times are agreed before the visit, rather than being a walk-up promise.
That route involves stairs and has no lift. Do not assume that access to the main church means access to the organ balcony. The ordinary visitor page says that wheelchair users can enter with an assistant and may need to wait up to about 15 minutes. Contact the cathedral before travelling if you need specific access arrangements. Tower tours also require advance booking, according to its visitor information.
Fit the cathedral into a Riga day
Use the Riga visitor guide to connect a cathedral visit with the city's other sights, food and transport. In the festive season, the Latvia Christmas markets guide covers the market beside the cathedral in Dome Square. Market hours do not establish church opening hours or concert availability.
Before leaving, check three things: the cathedral's weekly visiting notice, the exact concert date if you want music, and any advance booking needed for a balcony or tower visit. That keeps the plan tied to the activity you actually want to do.
