Late May through June gives the best mix of mild weather and thin crowds for a Riga-focused trip. July and August add Jūrmala's beach season, at the cost of more crowds and higher prices. Riga city break: any season works

Riga's UNESCO-listed Art Nouveau district reads well in any weather. The stone detail on Alberta and Elizabetes streets is the real draw, not the sky above it. May and September give the most comfortable walking weather, with noticeably fewer tour groups than July.

Winter works too, for travelers who prioritize museums and cafes over long walks outdoors. The district photographs just as well under grey winter light as it does in summer sun.

Jūrmala beach season: June through August

Jūrmala is a short rail trip from central Riga and functions as a proper beach town from June through August. The beach and promenade both fill up on warm weekends, and hotel rates along the coast rise to match. Outside that window, Jūrmala turns into a quiet, atmospheric walk rather than a swimming trip. It is still worth a visit for the scenery alone.

Rundāle Palace and Gauja National Park: late spring or early autumn

Rundāle Palace's formal gardens peak visually in late spring. Everything is freshly in bloom then. Gauja National Park's forest color peaks in early autumn instead, usually late September.

Both sights work at other times of year too. Midsummer's heat and crowds suit neither as well as these two shoulder windows do. Winter also closes some of the palace's garden sections entirely, worth checking before planning a visit around that season.

Latvia's Christmas market season: late November to December

Riga's Christmas market fills the Town Hall Square area with wooden stalls, mulled wine and a central tree. It runs from late November through December most years. This is Riga's second price and crowd peak alongside summer. Book hotels well ahead if the market anchors the trip. Expect real cold and short daylight hours during this window, often under seven hours of usable daylight by mid-December most years.

Official figures from Latvia's weather service, LVĢMC, give Riga a July average of about +19°C. January and February average about -2.2°C. July is also the wettest month, and March the driest.

Daylight swings widely with the season. In mid-June, Riga gets close to 18 hours of daylight. By mid-December that falls to under seven hours.

Two dates shape the calendar. Midsummer, called Līgo and Jāņi, falls on 23 and 24 June and is the country's biggest holiday. Many people leave the city for the countryside, and some businesses close. Independence Day on 18 November brings events and lights across Riga.

Since 12 October 2025, the EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) has registered non-EU citizens on short stays when they cross the Schengen external border. It records passport details, fingerprints and a facial image, and it replaces passport stamps. The European Commission says it has run at all Schengen borders since April 2026.
